How to play Spades

  • Play in two teams (partners sit across). Each hand every player bids the number of tricks they expect to take, or Nil to take none.
  • Spades are always trump. Follow the led suit when you can; you may not lead a spade until one has been played to break them.
  • Make your team’s combined bid to score ten per trick; every extra trick is a “bag” worth one point, but ten bags cost you 100.
  • A Nil bid scores ±100 for that player alone. First team to 500 wins — fall to −200 and you lose.

Spades — frequently asked questions

How many players is Spades for?

Piece Pals Spades is a four-player partnership game — you and a partner sitting across from each other take on the other two.

How does bidding work in Spades?

Before each hand every player bids the number of tricks they expect to win. Your team’s two bids are added together, and you score ten points per trick if you make the combined bid.

What is a Nil bid and what are bags?

Bidding Nil is a promise to take no tricks — succeed for +100, fail for −100. Every trick over your team’s bid is a “bag” worth one point, but collect ten bags and you lose 100.

Can I play Spades against the computer?

Yes — fill empty seats with computer opponents at Easy, Medium, or Hard, or invite three friends for a full four-player table.
